SUMMARY:Guru Nanak Jayanthi
DESCRIPTION:Guru Nanak Jayanthi is the most important and sacred festival in the Sikh community. Guru Nanak Jayanthi is the birthday of the first of the Ten Gurus of Sikhism. It is also called as Guru Nanak Gurupurab\, or Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav celebrated across the world by the Sikhs. Gurupurab is the sacred occasion of celebrating birthdays of Gurus. \nGuru Nanak Jayanthi is celebrated annually on full moon day in the month of “Karthik” as per the Hindu Calendar\, and it usually falls in October or November according to the Gregorian calendar. \nThe founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak was born in 1469\, in a village called Rai Bhoi di Talwandi\, popularly called as Nankana Sahib\, near Lahore\, Pakistan. Guru Nanak’s teachings are preserved in the holy texts of the Guru Granth Sahib. \nThe festivities begin with Prabhat Pheris which are the early morning processions that start at the Gurudwaras and proceed around the localities chanting hymns. The festival also includes the three-day Akhand Path\, during which the Guru Granth Sahib\, the holy book of the Sikhs is read out from the beginning to the end without a break. \nA day before Guru Nanak’s birthday a procession called Nagar Kirtan is organised\, and five men lead it\, hailed as the Panj Pyaras (five beloved ones)\, holding the Sikh triangular flag\, Nishan Sahib. On the day of Guru Nanak Jayanthi\, the Granth Sahib is decorated with flowers and carried on a palanquin in a procession. The procession finally leads to a Gurudwara\, where the devotees get together for a community lunch\, which is called Langar. \nGuru Nanak\, the first Guru of Sikhism\, contributed a total of 974 hymns to the book called  Guru Granth Sahib. It is worshipped as the supreme authority of Sikhism and is considered the final and perpetual guru of Sikhism.

SUMMARY:Diwali- the festival of lights
DESCRIPTION:Diwali\, the festival of lights\, is celebrated annually by the Hindu community across the world with grandeur. Diwali symbolises the celebration of the victory of good over evil and luminescence of knowledge to get rid of ignorance.  \nDiwali is observed on the new moon day (the final day) of Ashwin month as per Hindu calendar\, and it usually falls in the months of October or November as per Gregorian Calendar. Diwali is also known as Deepawali\, Deepotsav and by other names depending on the regions where it is celebrated. \nThe festival is being celebrated from ancient times in India and recorded in various scriptures like Padma Purana and Skanda Purana. Further\, foreign travellers like Al Biruni (Persia)\, Niccolo de Conti (Italy) and Domingo Paes (Portugal) mentioned about the festival in their records which are centuries old. \nThere are many variations why Diwali is celebrated\, but all of them signifies the remembrance of the victory of good. The Great Indian Epic Ramayana says people of Ayodhya celebrated the return of King Rama with his consort Sita and brother Lakshmana after killing the wicked king  Ravana. They lit the lamps across the city and celebrated the homecoming of Rama. \nIt is also said in the scriptures where Satyabhama\, the consort of Krishna killed Narakasura\, the cruel King of Pragjyotishpura (the present-day Assam) and liberated 16\,000 girls who were held captive by Narakasura. So people celebrate the liberation from the brutality of Narakasura. \nBesides Hindus\, Sikhs\, Jains and a sect of Buddhists called Newar Buddhists also celebrate Diwali. \nThe third Sikh Guru Amar Das made Diwali as a special day (like Baisakhi) for the congregation of Sikhs. In 1619\, the sixth Sikh Guru Hargobind was released from the prison held by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Hence Sikhs considered Diwali as the remembrance of those events. \nJains observe Diwali as “Mahavira Nirvana Divas”\, the day on which Mahavira met final nirvana (physical death). Newar or Nepami sect of Buddhists in Nepal also celebrate Diwali like Hindu community. \nDiwali is a five-day festival. The first day is “Dhanteras or Dhanatrayodashi”. People clean and decorate their houses and offer prayers to Lakshmi\, the Goddess of wealth. After offering prayers\, people usually buy jewellery\, utensils or other things. Further\, Dhanteras is also the birthday of Dhanvantari\, father of Ayurveda. People offer him prayers and seek his blessings for the well-being of their health. “National Ayurveda Day” is celebrated annually on the birthday of Dhanvantari who invented Ayurveda medicine. \nThe second day is called Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali. It is the day on which Narakasura was killed. And on this day\, people remember their ancestors and offer gratitude to them. \nThe third day is called Diwali\, which is the main festival. Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess Kali in Bengal) is worshipped\, and diyas (lamps) are placed in the evenings in front of every house. People celebrate Diwali night with bursting crackers. \nThe fourth day is called Annakut (heap of grain)\, Bali Pratipada\, Bali Padyami Padwa\, Govardhan puja. According to the scriptures\, King Bali was defeated by Lord Vishnu on this day. Further\, the day also signifies the food as “Annakut” food mountain” and farmers pay gratitude to the gods for the harvest they received as it is the end of the old crop season. Besides\, this day also exhibits the affection\, long-living and well-being of married couples. Additionally\, the new year starts from this day for Gujaratis. \nThe fifth day is called Bhai Duj\, which means brothers’ day. Brothers go to their sister’s home\, meet her family and celebrate the day by offering prayers and having lunch together. It goes in the spirit of Raksha Bandhan\, and marks the sister-brotherhood. It interprets the sister-brotherhood relation between the Yama and Yamuna and Subhadra and Krishna. \nWhatever the reasons behind celebrating Diwali\, there are scientific rationalisations too. Diwali usually falls in October/November when winter season just starts. Accumulation of water because of the lack of water flow at the end of the rainy season causes stagnated water bodies breeding grounds for bacteria\, mosquitoes and insects. \nDiyas which are lit with the help of oil attract the insects with its light. The insects then come and fall in it. Therefore winter crops are protected from the insects when diyas are lit at every house. Further\, the sesame oil used for lighting the diyas purifies the surroundings by killing the bacteria around it with its vapours. Also\, the firecrackers burst during the Diwali nights kills the mosquitoes\, which is proven scientifically. But the extensive use of firecrackers causes sound and air pollution.

SUMMARY:Vijaya Dashami
DESCRIPTION:Vijaya Dashami\, aka Dussehra\, is one of the rare festivals of Hindu culture where feminity is considered divine. It is a ten-day festival that is celebrated with much grandeur in India that it is not seen elsewhere. Vijaya Dashami usually comes in the months of September or October depending on the Hindu calendar. Vijaya means victory and Dashami means the tenth day. The religious texts connote it as “Victory over Evil” on the tenth day. Dussehra means “tenth day”\, and it also indicates the Triumph of Good”. \nDussehra is celebrated for a period of ten days\, where each different manifestation of Shakti (feminine divinity) is worshipped each day. The last three days are far more important in this festival and celebrated with the names of “Durgashtami”\, “Maharanavami”\, and “Vijayadashami”. Vijayadashami is the day on which Goddess Durga Killed the vicious king Mahishasura after a battle of ten days. It symbolises the victory over evil.  \nThe first nine days of the festival are celebrated as “Navaratri”. During these nine days idols of Goddess Durga are placed in public places and worshipped together.  \nAfter performing rituals for the first nine days\, on the tenth day\, the idols are immersed in water(visarjan) with sumptuous processions. The idea of immersion of idols after worshipping for nine days symbolises the nature of birth and death. \nAccording to Ramayana\, Vijaya Dashami is the day on which King Rama killed wicked king Raavana. This is why people in northern India play a short version of the epic Ramayana called “Ramlila”. On the day of Dussehra\, the tenth day\, the effigy of Ravana is burnt to signify the end of evil manners. \nAs per Mahabharata\, another great Indian epic\, Pandavas hid their distinctive weapons in the Shami tree during their period of exile. They took their weapons from the same place after the exile and worshipped the tree before heading to the war where they emerged victorious. Even today\, honouring Shami trees is a custom on Dussehra\, expressing respect for nature. \nDid you know? \n\nWest Bengal is a place known for Durga Puja during Navratri and Mysore is known for Dussehra celebrations.\nArms\, tools and vehicles are decorated and worshipped on the festival as gratitude since they provide the livelihood.

SUMMARY:International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
DESCRIPTION:“International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer” is observed on 16th September every year. It is marked to create and promote awareness about the importance of the ozone layer and its protection. The day is also called as World Ozone Day and was first celebrated in 1995. \nThe United Nations in 1994 declared 16th September as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer\, remembering the date of the signing of the Montreal Protocol on substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer\, in 1987. The Montreal Protocol is a multinational agreement designed in phasing out of production and consumption of various elements that are accountable for ozone depletion.  \nThe agreement initially focused on chemicals with higher ozone-depletion potentials\, including Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons. The phase-out schedule for HCFCs was relaxed due to their lower ozone-depletion possibilities\, and they were also used as substitutes for CFCs. Further\, in 2016\, the latest Kigali agreement in Rwanda was signed by the international community to phase-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). \nThe Montreal Protocol was drafted in line with the framework devised at the Vienna Convention (1985) to reduce the production of chlorofluorocarbons internationally. The Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol were the first treaties in history to achieve universal ratification. \nScientists of the British Antarctic Survey first published their findings of the depletion of the ozone layer above the earth’s surface in the Antarctica region\, and they named it as “Ozone Hole”. Subsequently\, the deliberations and conventions were made to rectify the problem of ozone depletion. \nNow\, the scientists have confirmed the ozone layer has started recovering\, and credit goes to the Montreal Protocol\, and it’s a successful implementation. \nDid you know? \nOzone (O3) is a particular form of oxygen\, present mostly in the stratosphere (an atmospheric layer lies between 10 and 40km above the earth’s surface). The ozone layer absorbs the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. Because of this reason\, it is considered as “Good Ozone”. On the other hand\, ozone on the earth’s surface produced by pollutants is harmful to living beings. Therefore\, it is called “Bad Ozone”.

It is also Ganesh Chaturthi which falls on the fourth day of Bhadrapada Masa of Hindu calendar. Usually\, it comes in the months of August/September as per the Gregorian calendar. \nAccording to Hindu scriptures\, Lord Ganesha is the God of sciences\, prosperity\, wealth\, knowledge\, and wisdom. SUMMARY:Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:The Independence Day of India is observed on 15th August every year to commemorate the liberation of India from the British. It marks the celebrations of independence and pays tributes to those who martyred in achieving freedom for India. \nIndia obtained independence from the British on 15th August 1947 after a prolonged struggle for nearly a century. Though direct struggle lasted for a century\, the discontent among the Indians against the British – sprung much before that with the arrival of East India Company. The discontent reached its zenith in 1857\, manifested as “Sepoy Mutiny”. The English company witnessed the first major revolt in 1857 where some historians termed it as “First war of Independence”. \nThough English had succeeded in the suppression of the 1857 revolt\, it failed in removing the seeds of nationalism that were sown in the hearts of Indians.  \nThe 1857 revolt sprouted the efforts for getting freedom and intensified after the arrival of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.  \nGandhi became the front runner and led the Indian independence movement in a new path called the “non-violence” route. And some other leaders have chosen revolutionary methods to emancipate the motherland from British manacles. The other leaders who have chosen a revolutionary path were no less committed than Gandhi. Eventually\, the efforts of all freedom fighters were paid off on 15th August 1947.  \nSince 1947\, on 15th of every August\, the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at Red Fort in New Delhi and delivers the speech. The speech follows a military parade showcasing India’s military strength. \nDid you know? \nThe countries like Bahrain\, Congo\, Liechtenstein\, North Korea and South Korea also celebrate Independence Day on 15th August.

The most popular event of the festival is “Dahi Handi” in which people gather to break the earthen pot fixed at a certain height from the ground. Devotees also observe fasting\, singing\, night vigils (Jagaran) and visiting Krishna temples. Women draw little footprints outside their house doors\, the footsteps welcoming Lord Kirshna walk into their homes. “The sole and foremost reason for celebrating this festival is bringing people together to strengthen unity”.

SUMMARY:Quit India Day
DESCRIPTION:Quit India Day remembers the day on which the Quit India movement was launched to overthrow the British rule in India and commemorate those who participated in this movement. \nMahatma Gandhi launched the Quit India movement on 8th August 1942 at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). The protest was launched to put an end to the British rule in India\, and it was started on 9th August 1942 the very next day of its launch. This movement is also called “August Movement” or “August Kranti” since the movement was started in August. Mahatma Gandhi gave the slogan “Do or Die” and delivered his speech marking the beginning of the Quit India Movement at Mumbai’s Gowalia Tank Maidan\, which is later called as August Kranti Maidan. “Do or Die” and “Quit India” became the battle cries of the people during the movement. \nOn 9th August\, the Indian National Congress was declared an unlawful association. Gandhi and prominent leaders\, namely Jawaharlal Nehru\, Sardar Vallabhai Patel and many others were arrested.  Thousands were killed and injured during the movement.  The British quickly crushed many of these demonstrations by mass detentions\, and more than 100\,000 people were imprisoned. Approximately 10000 people were killed in police firing in total. \nAfter the arrest of significant leaders\, a young lady called Aruna Asaf Ali hoisted the flag at Mumbai’s Gowalia Tank Maidan despite police warnings and government notices.  \nThe Muslim League\, the Communist Party of India\, Hindu Mahasabha and few more organisations did not offer their support to Quit India movement. \nThough British Suppressed the movement by 1944\, Indians were united against the British Rule\, unlike earlier times. And young leaders such as Jai Prakash Narayan\, Aruna Asaf Ali\, S.M. Joshi\, Ram Manohar Lohia and many others came into prominence.

SUMMARY:Hiroshima day
DESCRIPTION:Hiroshima Day is commemorated on 6th August every year. It is remembered to promote peace over war and bring awareness about the threats of nuclear weapons. The year 2020 marks the 75th year in commemorating the lakhs of people who died in the atomic bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. \nDuring World war-II (1939-45)\, Japan was fighting against the allied powers (the USA\, UK and the soviet union). Germany was already defeated in Europe\, and its ally Japan continued its fierce battle despite knowing that it could not win the battle. In late July\, Japan overturned the proposal of surrender put forth by the Allied powers. After Japan refused to surrender\, the United States decided to use nuclear bombs such that the war would come to an end after the bombings. \nHiroshima\, a manufacturing centre\, was chosen as the first target. On 6th August 1945\, B-20 bomber dropped a 9000 pounds Uranium-235 bomb called “Little Boy” at 8.15 in the morning. It exterminated five square miles of the city resulting in about 70\,000 immediate deaths. Japan remained unsurrendered after the bombing. \nOn 9th August 1945\, another B-29 bomber dropped 10000 pounds Plutonium bomb called “Fat Man” in Nagasaki at 11.02 am. Though this bomb was more powerful than the first one\, the topography of Nagasaki reduced its effect. It destroyed the 2.5 square miles of the city and caused around 40000 immediate deaths. \nJapan surrendered to the Allies on 15th August\, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki and signed the formal surrender agreement on 2nd September\, which finally put an end to world war-II. \nOver the next two to four months\, around one lakh people died due to the after-effects of atomic bombings in both cities. \nSince 1947\, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony has been held every year on August 6th each year. The families of the deceased and other participants participate in the event. They remember the victims of the nuclear catastrophe and call for the ban of nuclear weapons.

SUMMARY:Raksha Bandhan
DESCRIPTION:Rakshabandhan\, an incredible festival that is dedicated to honouring the relationship between brothers and sisters is specific to the Indian subcontinent. It exhibits bonding and caring in the relationship between a brother and a sister. \nRaksha Bandhan means “bond of protection” in Sanskrit. It is observed annually on “Sravana Purnima” as per Hindu lunar calendar\, which typically falls in August. On this day\, sisters tie a “rakhi” on the wrists of their brothers and pray for the brother’s long life and happiness. In return\, brothers affirm their responsibility of protecting sisters in every circumstance. The essence of this festival is that it is not only related to siblings. It is meant to celebrate any brother-sister relationship between men and women who may not be biologically related. \nRaksha Bandhan dates back to ancient times\, where it is mentioned in several scriptures and epics. One of the finest examples was mentioned in the Mahabharata\, the great Indian epic. Draupadi\, the wife of the Pandavas\, had torn the corner of her sari to prevent Lord Krishna’s wrist from bleeding. Thus\, a bond\, that of sister and brother developed between them\, and he vowed to protect her. \nSome other legends say that Roxana\, Alexander’s wife\, had heard of the Rakhi festival. Then she approached King Puru\, who accepted her as his sister. Consequently\, King Puru refrained from killing Alexander when the opportunity came during the war. \nThough Raksha Bandhan is celebrated all over India\, there are a few regional variations.  \nIn Haryana\, “Salono” is observed in association with Raksha Bandhan where priests are seen tying sacred amulets on people’s wrist. \nIn Odisha and West Bengal\, this festival is called “Jhulan Purnima” where worshipping of Lord Krishna and Radha takes place. \nIn Maharashtra\, “Narali Purnima” is observed along with Rakhi Purnima by the “Koli” community. Fishermen throw coconuts into the sea as a part of rituals offering to Lord Varuna to seek his blessings. \nThe other variants called Avani Avattam\, Kajri Purnima\, Pavitropana\, Jania Purnima and Rishitarpani are observed in different regions of India.

SUMMARY:Friendship Day
DESCRIPTION:The friendship day is celebrated to commemorate the value of friendship\, a special relationship in everyone’s life. It is celebrated across the world on different days. In India\, it is celebrated on the first Sunday in August every year. And for 2020\, it falls on 2nd August. \nThe idea of celebrating friendship day was first mooted by Joyce Hall\, the founder of Hallmark cards (manufacturer of greeting cards) in 1930. It was celebrated for a few years and later ignored by people realising that it was a marketing gimmick. \nOn 20th July 1958\, Dr. Ramon Artemio Brach suggested the idea of Friendship Day during a dinner with his friends in Paraguay. It resulted in the World Friendship Crusade\, a foundation that promotes friendship among humans\, irrespective of race\, colour\, creed and religion.  \nThe World Friendship Crusade coaxed the United Nations to recognise 30th July as World Friendship Day. Eventually\, on 27th July 2011\, the United Nations General Assembly declared 30th July as the International Day of Friendship. However\, different countries celebrate friendship day on different dates.  \nDid you know? \nIn 1998\, Nane Annan\, wife of the then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan\, named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship.

SUMMARY:Malala Day
DESCRIPTION:Malala Day is observed on 12th July every year in commemorating her efforts in advocating gender equality in education. The United Nations declared this day as Malala Day soon after her speech at the United Nations headquarters in 2013. \nMalala Yousafzai was born in a town called Mingora in Pakistan in 1997. Her father Ziauddin Yousafzai was a teacher and ran girls’ school in the town. He encouraged young Malala and supported her in every step.   \nIn 2008\, the Taliban took over her town\, where she was residing and said girls could not go to schools. They imposed restrictions and banned the girls from having a television\, listening to music etc. They enforced harsh punishments on those that defied their orders\, and this compelled Malala to leave the school which she loved the most. \nShe began demanding the rights of girls for education publicly. It provoked the Taliban. In October 2012\, the Taliban terrorists boarded the bus and attempted to kill Malala. They shot her on the head and fled away. She was hospitalised and later transferred to England for better treatment. People across the world stood in support of her and girls’ right for education. \nMalala was recovered after months of surgeries and treatment. She resumed her campaign for girls’ education and delivered a perfervid speech in the United Nations. Following this\, the United Nations declared her birthday 12th July as Malala Day. \nDid you know? \n\nMalala is the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. She was bestowed with that prize at the age of 17 in 2014.\nThe Government of Pakistan awarded Malala the first National Youth Peace Prize in 2012.\nIn 2015\, an Asteroid 316201 was named after Malala.\nMalala Yousafzai is the youngest-ever designated United Nations Messenger of Peace.

SUMMARY:World Population Day
DESCRIPTION:World Population Day is observed globally on 11th July every year. It is earmarked to create awareness among the public regarding population issues such as family planning\, gender equality\, poverty\, maternal health and some others. \nIn 1989\, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended observing 11th July as World Population Day\, a day to focus attention on the need and significance of population issues. It was primarily inspired by the Five Billion Day on 11th July 1987\, the approximate date on which the world’s population touched five billion people. \nThe first World Population Day was celebrated in 1990. Since then\, the specialised agency\, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has been active in celebrating world population day with coordination of various countries\, organisations and institutions.  \nDid you know? \n\nUNFPA is formerly known as the United Nations Fund for Population Activities. In 1987\, it was renamed as the United Nations Population Fund. However\, the original abbreviation\, UNFPA\, was retained.\nThe world population reached 7715 million in 2019.\nChina is the most populous country in the world with 1.4 billion people.\nVatican city is the least populous country in the world with less than 1000 people.

SUMMARY:Guru Purnima
DESCRIPTION:Guru Purnima\, a festival that is dedicated explicitly to paying tributes to the Gurus (teachers) is being celebrated in India for thousands of years. Guru Purnima usually falls on the full moon day of Ashada month (typically the first full moon after the summer solstice) in Hindu calendar. In 2020\, it is celebrated on 5th July. \nIn Sanskrit\, “Gu” means darkness or ignorance\, and “Ru“ denotes the remover or dispeller of that darkness. Therefore\, Guru means the one who removes the ignorance of the people (disciple) and makes him/her get enlightened. \nGuru Purnima is also known as “Vyasa Purnima”. It is the birth date of the great Indian Sage “Vyasa Maha Muni”. Hence\, the name “Vyasa Purnima”. He is known for his writings such as Mahabharata\, Puranas and Brahma Sutras. He also segregated the Vedas for easy understanding of the people. \nAs per other scriptures\, this is the day on which Lord Shiva had transferred the seven dimensions of yogic knowledge to seven rishis popularly called Saptarshis. Therefore\, Lord Shiva is considered as “Adiguru” (the first teacher). \nIn the Buddhist tradition\, this is the day on which Gautama Buddha gave the first sermon at Sarnath after his enlightenment in Bodhgaya. \nIn Jain tradition\, Guru Purnima is also known as Treenok Guha Purnima. It is the day on which Mahavira\, the 24th Tirthankara\, made Indrabhuti Gautam\, later known as Gautam Swami\, as his first disciple\, thus becoming a Treenok Guha himself. \nDid you know? \n\nGuru Purnima is also celebrated in Nepal and Bhutan apart from India.\nIn Nepal\, teachers day is observed on Guru Purnima.

SUMMARY:Rath Yatra
DESCRIPTION:Rath Yatra is a Hindu festival associated with Lord Jagannath and held at Puri\, Odisha. It is the ancient Ratha Yatra that takes place in India and the world. The descriptions of this festival can be found in Brahma Purana (first Maha-Purana)\, Padma Purana (named after lotus in which the creator god Brahma appeared)\, Skanda Purana (named after Lord Shiva and Devi Parvathy’s son\, an elaborate version)\, and Kapila Samhita (describes Lord Shiva\, Durga\, Surya and Vishnu shrines in Odisha). These Upapuranas are a genre of Hindu religious texts. \nThe annual festival of Ratha Yatra is celebrated on Ashada Shukla Paksha Dwitiya (in the bright fortnight of Ashada month) and happens for 15 days.  This year\, it will begin on 23rd June. \nThe festival celebrates the Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to Gundicha Temple via his Mausi Maa Temple (maternal aunt’s) near Puri. \nHow is the Rath Yatra celebrated? \nThe deities Lord Jagannath\, his elder brother Balabhadra and younger sister Devi Subhadra along with the Lord Sudarshana are taken out of the  Lord Jagannath temple and placed inside the chariots\, which stand in front of the temple. The deities come in ‘Pahandi’ and board their chariots. After that\, the Gajapati Maharaja (the king of Puri and first servitor of lords) does the holy cleaning of chariots through a gold broom\, and this process is called ‘Chhera Pahanra.’ Then the devotees pull the chariots up to the Gundicha Temple (also known as the birthplace of the lords). The lords stay at this temple for seven days. \nAs described in the Puranas\, getting a glimpse of the four deities during the evening brings an incessant bliss to a devotee. \nAfter that\, the return journey of chariots to the Lord Jagannath temple is performed\, and it is known as Bahuda Yatra. While the chariots come back\, a special type of cake (Poda Pitha) is offered to the deities at Mausi Maa Temple. \nOn the 12th day of the bright moon phase(Ashada Shukla Dwadashi)\, a special type of sweet drink with cheese\, milk\, sugar and spices (Adhara Pana) is offered to the deities on the chariots. \nThe last phase of the Rath Yatra is known as Niladri Bije on the 13th day of the bright fortnight of Ashada\, where the ceremony of four deities returning to the bejewelled platform. \nDuring the annual event\, the devotees (Hindus\, non-Hindus and foreigners) from all over the world throng to Puri with a holy desire to pull the lord’s chariots. The chariots are approximately 45 feet high and pulled by thousands of pilgrims who turn up for the event. \nDid you know? \nLord Jagannath went to Gundicha temple along with his siblings leaving his consort Goddess “Lakshmi” alone. Consequently\, delay in their return worried her and felt that she was ignored. And Goddess Lakshmi stopped Lord Jagannath entering the temple after their arrival.  \nFinally\, she got convinced with Lord’s explanation and pleadings and allowed him into the temple. It indicates that even God has marital problems due to misconceptions and misunderstanding like an ordinary guy. This story gives a clear message that there should not be a misunderstanding between a wife and husband. This entire episode logically implies our routine life. \nThe Chariots \nThe three chariots are newly constructed every year through the wood of some specific trees\, such as Phassi\, Dhausa and decorated as per a unique scheme followed for centuries. Lord Jagannatha’s chariot is called Nandighosha. Lord Jagannath is identified with Krishna\, who is also known as Pitambara (the one who wears golden-yellow robes). Hence\, the chariot canopy is lined with yellow stripes. \nThe chariot of Lord Balabhadra is known as Taladhwaja. It has a palm tree on its flag. \nThe chariot of Devi Subhadra is known as Devadalana or Padmadhwaja. \nThe chariots are placed in the front of the majestic temple close to its eastern entrance\, also known as Sinhadwara or Lion’s Gate.

SUMMARY:International Yoga Day
DESCRIPTION:International Yoga day started it’s celebration globally in 2015.   Every year on 21st June\, the world celebrates International Yoga day to spread awareness on yoga practices and its health benefits. The word ‘yoga’ means union or to join\, and  was derived from the Sanskrit language.’ \nYoga is an ancient physical\, mental and spiritual practice\, which renders calmness\, confidence\, and courage to people. Yoga is practised in numerous forms worldwide. Yoga renders holistic healing and is considered as a huge stress buster. \nHistory \nInternational Yoga Day is also renowned as World Yoga Day. It was first celebrated on 21st June 2015. On 27th September 2014\, our honourable Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi gave a miraculous yoga-related speech in the United Nations Assembly which drew support\, prominence and declaration of International Yoga day by Kutesa\, the President of the UN assembly. The proposal gained the support of more than 170 countries and the United States approved it on 11th December 2014. \nWhat did Mr Narendra Modi say in his speech? \nYoga is an indispensable gift of India’s old tradition. It unites body and mind\, thought and action\, man and nature. Yoga is the best approach to the physical and mental well-being of an individual. The objective of yoga is not just exercise\, but to discover the sense of unity with yourself\, world and nature. By adapting the yoga in lifestyle and creating consciousness\, it can help in dealing with climate change. \nWhy is this celebrated day on June 21st?  \n21st June is the day of the summer solstice (when the sun begins to move from north to south) and this transition period is considered as the best time for meditation purposes. \nThe theme of International Yoga Day 2020 \nConsidering the circumstances that COVID-19 has brought to the world\, the 2020 theme is – Yoga at home and yoga with family. According to this\, people will be asked to perform yoga at home with families while following the social distancing protocols and wearing masks. \nDid you know? \nSwami Vivekananda introduced yoga to the western world\, and after that many western scholars and eastern gurus spread it to such a large extent that it is studied in the form of a subject as well. \nIn 1893\, Swami Vivekananda delivered his famous speech on Indian religious traditions at the Parliament of Religions\, in Chicago. It won him an immense adoration from the Americans. While he was spreading awareness of ancient Indian spirituality in the west\, he found yoga to be a great idea to aid him in the process. In the summer of 1894\, Vivekananda included the concept of Neo-Vedantic yoga (drawn from Indian texts and western science) to his curriculum based on the fact that a large number of people in America crave for a personal experience of Indian spirituality. It appealed to a large number of Americans. In 1895\, he established the Vedanta Society in New York\, which is still there.

Each year\, it is celebrated worldwide on this day with a  unique and novel emphasis on Desertification and Drought issues.  \nUnited Nations Convention \nThe United Nations Convention was also adopted on 17th June 1994 in Paris and entered into force in December 1996. On the same day\, the United Nation Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) was incepted too. The states were invited in the convention to devote the World Day to promote the requirement for international cooperation in the countries experiencing drought and desertification. The UNCCD is based on the principles of partnership\, participation and decentralization.  \nThe action plan of the convention \nDesertification occurs when previously fertile land becomes desert due to deforestation\, drought or improper agricultural activities. \nThe 196 countries in the convention try to improve living conditions for people by restoring and maintaining soil fertility. They also encourage the local people to fight land degradation by planting trees and try to educate the public about effective methods to fight desertification. The 2010-2020 decade has been declared as the United Nations Decade and fight against desertification. \nSustainable Development Goals of the United Nation Convention \nThe 2030 agenda declares that we must be determined to protect the planet from degradation.  Take care of sustainable consumption\, production\, managing the resources and formulate a strong action plan towards climate change. \nThe theme  for 2020 \nThis year desertification and drought day will focus on the links between consumption and land. It is running under the slogan “Food\, Feed and Fibre” intending to educate individuals on how to introduce their personal impact.

SUMMARY:World Blood Donor Day
DESCRIPTION:Every year on 14th June\, the countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day to raise awareness about the requirement for blood donation since its inception in 2005.  \nObjectives \nThe World Blood Donor Day celebrates the unpaid blood donors for their life-saving contribution\, to encourage others to start donating. \nIt is also dedicated to ensuring that all individuals and communities have access to timely supplies of safe and quality assured blood and blood products affordably\, as an integral part of universal health coverage. \nBackground of World Blood Donor Day \nBlood transfusion saves many lives every year. It aids patients suffering from life-threatening diseases (like Heart attacks\, Lung problems\, Hypertension)  to live longer and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. Many countries have an insufficient supply of safe blood\, and due to this reason\, blood services face the challenge of maintaining an ample amount of blood supplies with quality.  \nHistory of World Blood Donor Day \nDuring the 58th World Health Assembly\, in May 2005\, the health ministers from all across the world declared their support towards voluntary blood donation in recognition of the requirement of blood transfusion to save millions of lives. And they designated the World Blood Donor Day an annual event to be held on 14th June. \nThis day also brings a precious opportunity to the donors to commemorate the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner (a scientist who received the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system) on 14th June. \nThe theme of World Blood Donor Day \nThe theme highlights all the notions of ‘sharing’ and ‘connection’ amongst blood donors and patients. The campaign theme for 2020 is ‘Safe blood saves lives’\, and the slogan is ‘Give blood and make the world a healthier place.’ The idea behind the campaign is to focus on the contribution an individual can make to improve the health of others.

SUMMARY:World Day against Child Labour
DESCRIPTION:World Day against Child Labour is marked yearly on 12th June. It was first launched in 2002 by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). ILO is a United Nations Agency that works toward establishing International Standards and social\, economic justice. It was founded 100 years ago in 1919.  \nThe objective of World Day against child labour is to prevent child labour\, provide education and basic amenities to those children that are victims of child labour. \nWorld Day against Child Labour 2020 will be conducted as a virtual campaign. It is being organised jointly with the Global March Against Child Labour and the International Partnership for Cooperation on Child Labour in Agriculture (IPCCLA). It will focus on the impact of the pandemic COVID-19 crisis on child labour. \n \nOn 12th June every year\, Governments\, organisations and individuals come together to discuss the predicaments of child labour and devise measures needed to eliminate it. \nThe word ‘child labour’ refers to the work carried out by children under 18 years of age that deprives them of their basic right to education and childhood freedom. Child labour work is harmful to their mental and physical health. Children are employed to work in Agriculture\, Construction\, Domestic Help\, Manufacturing\, Mining etc. and it is quite exhausting and laborious. \nNot all work done by the children is considered as child labour. Children helping their parents in household chores\, assisting in the family business and earning pocket money beyond school hours/during holidays cannot be classified as child labourers. Moreover\, these types of work help in the overall personality development of a child. \nDid you know? \n\nAs per the International Labour Organisation’s report\, there are around 152 million children employed as child labour. Seventy-two million of them are in hazardous work.\nAlmost half of the estimated child labour is present in Africa.\nAmong 152 million children\, 64 million are girls\, and 88 million are boys.

SUMMARY:World Oceans Day
DESCRIPTION:World Oceans Day is observed annually on 8 June. Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) proposed the idea of a special day for oceans at the Earth Summit held in Brazil in 1992. Eventually\, the proposal was accepted in 2008\, and the United Nations designated 8 June as “World Oceans Day”. The theme of “World Oceans Day” 2020 is “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean”. \nThe United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea is coordinating various activities on World Oceans Day by raising awareness about the importance of oceans and the role of the United Nations. \n“World Ocean Network” sponsored by the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) is instrumental in building support for ocean awareness events on 8 June. \nWorld Oceans Day is celebrated annually to raise awareness of how oceans play a significant role in a human’s life and our responsibility to protect the oceans. \nDid you know? \n\nOver three billion people across the world depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their subsistence.\nOceans consume about 30 per cent of carbon dioxide produced by humans\, reducing the repercussions of global warming.\nOceans contain nearly 200\,000 classified species\, but actual numbers may prevail in the millions.\nOceans deliver 70% of oxygen.

SUMMARY:World Environment Day
DESCRIPTION:World Environment Day is celebrated each year on 5th June. It marks the date on which the first conference on environmental issues was held by the United Nations(UN) in Stockholm\, Sweden in 1972.  It is known as “Conference on the Human Environment” and popularly called as “Stockholm Conference. The goal was to formulate ideas for environment problems collectively. \nThe conference was prominent and successful. Later the same year (in 1972)\, the UN designated 5th June as the “World Environment Day.” It urged various governments and organizations to take up activities reaffirming their solicitude for the protection and augmentation of the environment on that day every year. A specialized agency called the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was also created to address environmental issues. \nThe maiden “World Environment Day” was celebrated in 1974. Since then\, it addressed many issues related to the environment such as global warming\, ozone layer depletion\, desertification and several others.  \nThough it started in 1974\, the idea of rotating the countries to host activities did not begin until 1987.  Today\, it is celebrated across the globe.  \nThe theme changes every year and also the host country. The theme for 2020 is “Biodiversity”\, and the host country is Colombia in partnership with Germany.

Fasting is exempted for those who are travelling\, pregnant\, suffering from illnesses\, lactating and menstruating. If one breaks fast because of any reason\, he/she should fast again at a later date. Typically\, they do fasting to worship Allah rather than dietary things. Moreover\, it is mentioned during the prayers before Sahar and Iftar as a part of Intention (Niyyah). \nGenerally\, Ramzan starts from after the new moon day when the crescent appears in the sky\, and similarly\, it ends when another crescent appears after new moon day in the next month (around 30 days). At the end of the Ramzan\, they break the fast while celebrating the three-day-long festival called “Eid-ul-Fitr”.
