SUMMARY:National Technology Day
DESCRIPTION:National Technology Day is celebrated annually on 11 May\, to commemorate the technological advances and events that took place on that day in 1998. \nIndia became the sixth nuclear country (others are US\, Russia\, UK\, France\, and China) on that day by successfully testing the Shakti-I nuclear missile as a part of “Operation Shakti” at Pokhran\, in Rajasthan. \nWhile nuclear tests were underway at Pokhran\, the first indigenous aircraft “Hansa – 3” successfully had a flight in Bangalore. It was mainly intended for pilot-training developed by National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL)\, a lab of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). \nThe day saw another breakthrough by accomplishing the final test-fire of the “Trishul” missile. It was a quick reaction Surface-To-Air (SAM) missile inducted by the Air Force and Army. \nBy witnessing the colossal accomplishments on that day\, the then Prime Minister of India\, AB Vajpayee\, declared 11 May as National Technology Day.  \nSince 1999\, the Technology Development Board (TDB) has celebrating this special day by honouring the individuals\, institutions and others whose innovations and programs led to the development of technology in India. Central and State Governments\, educational institutions\, research organisations create awareness and promote science and technological insights among the students and children by organising science fairs and technical symposiums.

SUMMARY:World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day
DESCRIPTION:World Red Cross Day is marked on 8 May annually to commemorate the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant\, the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). It is celebrated every year to honour the contribution of it’s volunteers to the people who are in need. \nThe first Red Cross Day was marked on 8 May 1948. Subsequently\, the names of the day have been changed and finally settled with the name “World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day” in 1984. \nInception \nIn 1859\, Henry Dunant witnessed the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino where thousands of soldiers and civilians died and wounded. Later\, he advocated the creation of national relief organisations with trained volunteers who could offer assistance to the war-wounded soldiers irrespective of the sides they were fighting for. In 1963\, Dunant set up a national relief association which later became the International Committee of the Red Cross.  \nIt adopted the symbol of the red cross on white background\, an inverse to the Switzerland national flag\, to identify the medical workers on the battleground. But in the 1870s\, the red cross was replaced by red crescent by the Ottoman Empire\, and many Islamic Countries followed that move.  \nDid you know? \nHenry Dunant was the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

SUMMARY:Buddha Purnima
DESCRIPTION:Buddha Purnima is celebrated across the world by the Buddhist Community to commemorate the birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha. It’s also called “Vesak” in India.  \nBuddha means “enlightened person”. His original name was “Siddartha” born to Shuddodana (chieftain of Sakya clan) and Maya\, in Lumbini. His mother died during his infancy and later\, he was brought up by his maternal aunt\, Gautami\, sister of Maya\, in Kapilavastu. Thus he acquired the name of “Gautama Siddartha”. Gautama Buddha was contemporary to Bimbisara and Mahavira. Siddartha was married to “Yashodhara” and had a son called “Rahula”. \nSiddartha once went outside the palace and encountered the human suffering after witnessing the four people – older man\, diseased man\, corpse and an ascetic. He then inspired by the hermit and renounced everything and went out in quest of enlightenment. He wandered across jungles\, met two teachers and learnt yogic meditation. \nOnce\, he sat under the Pipal (Bodhi) tree during meditation in Bodh Gaya (Bihar)\, he got enlightenment. Thus\, he earned the name “Buddha”. Later he gave the first sermon at Sarnath (Varanasi). Next\, he moved on along the Gangetic plains for the rest of his life to teach the four noble truths – Dukkha (suffering)\, Samudaya (cause of suffering)\, Nirodha (eliminating the pain)\, and Magga (path of elimination of suffering). \nHe said that craving for something causes pain if it is not acquired. One should end the suffering by removing the desire by following the eight-fold path. It consists of  \n\nRight Understanding (Samma Ditthi)\nRight Thought (Samma Sankappa)\nRight Speech (Samma Vaca) \nRight Action (Samma Kammanta)\nRight Livelihood (Samma Ajiva) \nRight Effort (Samma Vayama)\nRight Mindfulness (Samma Sati)\nRight Concentration (Samma Samadhi)\n\nBuddha and his followers continued teaching all the years and had to stop at Kushinagar\, where Buddha had reached Mahaparinirvana (death).

SUMMARY:International Workers Day
DESCRIPTION:International Workers Day is observed annually on 1 May. It is also known as May Day and Labour Day (in some countries). Working-class people celebrate it as a festival to mark their efforts and contributions to society. And Governments of some countries declared it as a public holiday. \nIt started as a commemoration of the Haymarket Affair. In the late 19th century workers were used to working more than 60 hours a 6-day week. They were subjected to illness and stress because of long working hours. And they demanded an 8-hour workday. But\, it was opposed by the business elite and employers. \nThe Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions proclaimed and demanded that the 8-hour workday would be implemented from 1 May 1986\, in a convention held in October 1884\, in Chicago. This organisation later became as American Federation of Labor. Following the year\, the proclamation was backed by the Knights of Labour – America’s largest labour organisation. \nOn 1 May 1886\, thousands of workers across America held rallies with the slogan “8-hour day with no cut in pay”. Protests went peaceful till 3 May\, then all of a sudden a spat aroused that led to police firing that killed a few demonstrators. On 4 May\, the rally was organised at Haymarket Square\, to protest the killings. But soon police arrived there to disperse them and an unidentified individual threw a bomb on police officers. The violence erupted\, and police started firing\, which resulted in killings again. \nIn 1890\, lakhs of people rallied in remembrance of people who were killed in Haymarket Riots in London on 1 May. Hence\, May Day is celebrated to pay homage to the people who died in the riots who demanded decent working conditions and legitimate working hours. \nSome countries celebrate labour day\, not on the International Day of Workers. Let us see some of them. \nThe United States – First Monday of September \nCanada – First Monday of September \nNew Zealand – Fourth Monday of October \nDid you know? \nEarlier May Day is celebrated as the Spring Festival. \n
