Article 370 that provided autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir was included in the constitution of India in 1956 and was repealed by the President of India effective 6 August 2019. Inclusion of Article 370 has been a contentious matter right from its beginning.

Accession of Jammu and Kashmir

After the independence and bifurcation of India into two countries, princely states had given a chance to join any of the countries or to remain a separate country. Maharaja Hari Singh, the ruler of Jammu & Kashmir, decided not to join any country but to stay independent.
